other common names: button snakeroot, gayfeather, prairie blazing star
Liatris: meaning unknown; its origin lost in the mists of antiquity
Pycnostachya: from the Greek pyhnos, meaning “dense” or “thick”
Daisy family: Asteraceae (Compositae)
